Terms of use
Version 1 · last updated 13 October 2026
These are the rules for using Swapshop. We've written them in plain English. By creating an account you agree to them.
1. Who we are
Swapshop (swapshop.smallism.org) is run by Smallism ("we", "us"), a one-person, self-funded non-profit. Contact us at admin@smallism.org.
2. Who can use Swapshop
- You must be 18 or over.
- Swapshop is currently for people in the UK, and is invite-only while in beta.
- One account per person. Keep your password to yourself; you're responsible for what happens on your account.
3. What Swapshop is, and isn't
- Swapshop helps members find each other and agree swaps of skills and time. The swap itself is an arrangement between the two members; we're not a party to it, we don't employ or vet members, and we don't guarantee anyone's work, qualifications, honesty or safety.
- We check new listings and photos before they're shown, but that's a check for suitability, not an endorsement.
4. No money
- Swaps are exchanges of work and time. Don't ask for, offer or take money, deposits or payments through Swapshop.
- Any credits Swapshop introduces have no cash value. They can't be bought, sold, transferred for money or exchanged for cash, and we can adjust or withdraw them.
5. Your responsibilities
- Qualifications: only offer work you're competent to do. For regulated work (for example gas work, which must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, or notifiable electrical work), you must hold the required registration and must not mislead anyone about it.
- Tax: you're responsible for your own tax. If you swap in the course of a business, HMRC may treat it as income.
- Insurance: you're responsible for having any insurance you need.
- Safety: follow our safety guidance and use your own judgement about who you swap with.
- The law: don't use Swapshop for anything illegal.
6. What you mustn't do
- Harass, threaten, abuse or discriminate against anyone.
- Post anything false or misleading, including fake testimonials or qualifications.
- Scam, spam, advertise unrelated businesses, or try to move people onto paid arrangements.
- Post other people's personal information, or photos of people without their permission.
- Interfere with the site, scrape it, or create accounts automatically.
7. Your content
You own what you post: listings, photos, messages, reviews. You give us permission to store it and show it on Swapshop as the site is designed to (for example, approved listings and photos on your public profile). You must have the right to post it. We may remove anything that breaks these terms.
8. Moderation, suspension and leaving
- We can refuse, remove or hide content, and suspend or close accounts, if we reasonably think someone has broken these terms or put others at risk. Where it's safe to, we'll tell you why.
- You can delete your account at any time from your profile.
9. Our responsibility to you
- Swapshop is free and provided "as is". We'll try to keep it running and secure, but can't promise it will always be available or error-free.
- Because we're not a party to swaps, we're not responsible for the work members do, or for loss or damage arising from a swap.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
10. Changes
We may update these terms. If the change matters, we'll ask you to accept the new version next time you sign in.
11. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
